Amie Sillah Sarr was the special guest of honour at the One Billion Rising Revolution to end violence against women, held at 
GAMCOTRAP’s Head quarters in Kanifing institutional area 5th October, 2015.
Amie Sillah Sarr said violence against women and girls is prohibited that as partners in every aspect of human life being at home, community and government they should be cherished, loved, respected and protected by all and sundry by law and practice.
The guest of honour who was wearing different caps, Amie Sillah-Sarr a trained Public Health Officer, Teacher, Mentor, Politician, Journalist and activist who has served in many domains shared her experience with young activists urging them to be steadfast and focus as the struggle for rights is tough and they will be confronted with trials and tribulations but the end result is victory and a legacy.
She touched on poverty which is driving female and male youths to take up dangerous ‘back way’ journeys for greener pastures.
“Parents/guardians are selling precious assets to send their children with the illusion that they will succeed and take them out of poverty, every person’s wish is to live in dignity, liberty and prosperity; should parents be blamed when governments’ have no policy in place to address such issues? This is the critical mind we need to finally solve our problems by using our precious votes to change our situation.”
She then asked how many of the activists do have voters’ card. Half in attendance do have. She then urged others who don’t have to try and get one.
Amie also touched on climate change.
“We have to preserve our heritage and hand it over to our generation and generations yet unborn. As activists we should be involved in sustainability program in what so ever project we undertake.”
Amie also touched on impunity which as a nation we should stop and struggle for democratic and republican values by standing for elective position or vote for agents of positive change.
Amie also applauded GAMCOTRAP for social inclusion by inviting people with challenges of all sorts who are equally abled under conducive environment.
Amie said we need a law on FGM/C to protect our children coupled with training, sensitization and giving alternative livelihood opportunities to circumcisers. According to GAMCOTRAP’ reports communities are responding positively and are asking our law makers to come up with the sanction to protect women/girls.
“The One Billion Rising Revolution 2016 is a step in the right direction, the perpetuators, perpetrators in public and private have to be named, shamed and sanctioned; we have to break the culture of silence now and forever!”
