Man summons the Sheriff at High Court

By Lamin Sanyang The Sheriff of the High Court was summoned by the lawyer of one Mr. Jambantang Ceesay, resident of Faji Kunda for allegedly forfeiting a landed property belonging to him as collateral to his brother’s business partners without his knowledge. The matter was mentioned yesterday, Monday 12 January, before Justice Joseph Ikpala of the Banjul High Court. When the case was mentioned Lawyer Lamin S Camara appeared for the plaintiff whiles the Sheriff, Mr. LM Sanneh represented himself. Justice Ikpala advice the Sheriff to contact the AG Chambers for a counsel to represent him as he cannot stand in the witness box to be examine, cross examined and go back to the bar to represent himself at the same time. “It is only in the Gambia, I see a Sheriff representing himself. It is very unfair and unacceptable,” said Justice Ikpala. The trial judge said he would want to go through what the respondent has filed in reply to the summon made by the plaintiff. He also advised the lawyer of the plaintiff to file writ summons and should not come in the way of originating summons. Meanwhile, the mater was adjourned till Monday, 2nd February 2015.  ]]>
