Karpowership, a Turkish energy company operating in The Gambia, on Monday provided food aid to one hundred and fifty (150) Gambian needy families in observance of the holy month of Ramadan.

The donated items include bags of rice, sugar and four parcels of dates to needy families. Each family was given one (50kg) bag of rice, one (50kg) bag of sugar and 4 parcels of dates for the month of Ramadan.

The presentation ceremony was held at the energy company’s headquarters in Fajara. The donation was also part of the power company’s initiative to support the poor and underprivileged Gambians.

According to the company’s officials, 12th April 2021, marked exactly the third year since they started operation in The Gambia, supplying the country’s energy company with 36 megawatts of energy.

Speaking before the presentation of the items, Ms Fatou Camara, the Company’s Public Relation Officer said Karpowership has been providing food aid to Gambian families. She said they have rendered support to the foundation of the country’s First Lady.

“We will be presenting rice, sugar and dates to a little over 150 families in The Gambia,’’ she said.

“This is our third year of operation in The Gambia – but this was also the fourth food presentation. Ramadan is at the corner, we all know Islam really values these food donations, so we have to share,’’ said Yankuba Mamburay, the project manager of Karpowership in The Gambia.

He explained that their primary mandate was electricity generation, adding that they came in the county in 2018 and they are glad to be part of the development programmes of The Gambia.

“Electricity is very important and without it no nation can develop. Our principals down in Turkey-Istanbul, know that it’s also important to help the poor and needy,’’ he said.

Mamburay further said they do not only concentrate on electricity generation, but they also reach out to Gambian needy families and provide them with food items and other social support. He said they also try to make sure they help every sector of the country’s economy.

“We also helped in the Education, Environment, Fisheries, Health sectors and etc. Therefore, we will continue to do this and we are hopeful that our operation in this country will continue too,’’ he said.

According to him, electricity supply has been improved significantly since their arrival in the country, saying their aim is to make sure there is smooth uninterrupted electricity supply in the country just as they do in other parts of the world. He said they supply electricity to many countries in west Africa, south America and so on.

“I want to commend the management of Karpowership and team that are working 24/7 inside the ship parked in Banjul seaport to make sure the country does not experience uninterrupted electricity supply,’’ he said.

Mr. Mamburay thanked Gambia Government, National Water and Electricity Company (NAWEC) and other partners for allowing them to operate and supplying electricity to the country.
