WILL THE EU SEND AN OBSERVER TEAM TO MONITOR THE FORTHCOMING PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION?
Our information is that the EU was ready to deploy a small Election Expert Mission (EEM) to provide a technical assessment of the overall electoral process. Such an Election Expert Mission was deployed for the last presidential election in The Gambia in 2011.
According to our source, the EU was informed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of The Gambia that the mission was not accepted.
The local diplomatic corps will instead organize the Joint Diplomatic Watch which is an exercise to produce factual reporting on the upcoming Presidential elections. It significantly differs in objective, its scope, depth and duration to the EEM.
