WHY ARE FARMERS NOT SELLING THEIR NUTS AT THE SECCOS?

97

The groundnut trade season has started in earnest. The seccos in URR where some Foroyaa reporters have visited, other than Kalari and Dingiring, do not give a promising impression. These seccos (buying points) are largely empty of sale of groundnut produce while some licensed buying agents are going to villages to purchase nuts. There are allegations by secco presidents that they are not transporting what they buy to GGC but are bent on taking it out of the country.

Foroyaa has been reaching out to the GGC management to find out whether there are any preconditions for issuing licence to buyers so that they would sell the nuts to the company. The groundnut price has been increased twice but it appears that the licensed agents are paying more and do not bother weighing and screening them. This is more attractive to the farmers. Foroyaa will publish the views of the GGC on this as soon as we get them.
