QUESTION OF THE DAY
Umaru Fofana of the BBC gave the following report in the Programme ”Africa Eye “ : According to Mr Fofana a review of Chinese Import data would reveal that “about 600,000 tons of Rosewood were imported over the last 6 years, amounting to about $300 million.
“In 2019, the Gambia exported 100,000 tons of Rosewood to China, representing a four-fold increase over the quantity exported in 2018. Therefore, the illegal trade in the Rosewood tree has not stopped.” It’s ongoing in the “New Gambia.”
Foroyaa calls on the Government to institute a special study on the trade in Rosewood and further prepare the way forward for re-forestation putting special emphasis on planting Rosewood for trading purposes since the market is available.
