Professor Pierre Gomez, Acting Vice Chancellor of the University of the Gambia (UTG), has called on his fellow Gambians especially the students to give their full support to the newly appointed UTG Vice Chancellor, Professor Herbert Robinson.

Professor Gomez made this appeal on Wednesday at the UTG, while delivering the matriculation speech on the occasion of the 11th matriculation ceremony of the UTG.

He informed the students that the President of the Republic of the Gambia, Adama Barrow, has approved the appointment of Professor Herbert Robinson as the new Vice Chancellor of the UTG.

“On 30th November, 2021, the Chancellor, His Excellency, President Adama Barrow, approved the appointment of Professor Herbert Robinson as Vice Chancellor of the UTG. The appointment is the culmination of a rigorous and painstaking search process for an inspiring leader for the country’s only public university. He emerged as first choice in a highly competitive international group of scholars,” he announced; adding that the University is pleased that a Gambian national who went through the Schools in the country and beyond, will occupy the position of Vice Chancellor, to steer the direction of the University with effect from January 2022.

“On behalf of the University community, we heartily congratulate Professor Herbert Robinson on his appointment and wish him a very successful tenure as our Vice Chancellor”, he remarked. “I call on students, staff and the general community to give him their fullest support,” he told the students; indicating that there cannot be nation building when the people want to bring down their compatriots; instead, citizens should celebrate what they have. This way, the Gambia will develop as we become the gatekeepers of our country.”

“I pray that when Professor Herbert Robinson starts in the first week of January 2022, you will all give him the support required. This is because he has been vested the powers stated in the University Act and its condition of service and bylaws, meant for the discipline and smooth running of the institution,” he said.

He reiterated the need for students to give their full support to Professor Herbert Robinson, in order to build a better UTG and move the institution forward.
