By Lamin Sanyang Honourable Amadou Khan, National Assembly Member for Jokadu yesterday, CPMSTuesday 6 December, at the National Assembly in Banjul, raised concerns over the low prices of groundnut offered to farmers in the country.Honourable Khan speaking at the Legislative Chambers said he represents the farmers because he is a farmer. He called on the Gambia Groundnut Company to reconsider the prices offered to farmers for their groundnuts. He adduced that the company is buying groundnut at cheaper prices than the foreign buyers registered with them. The Jokadu Parliamentarian lamented the growing number of farmers crossing the borders to neighbouring Senegal to sell their farm produce. He adduced that the company is offering about D15,000 per ton of groundnut whilst it goes up to CFA 40 thousand francs in the neighbouring Senegal. He argues that the difference between the two prices is huge. He called on the Gambia Groundnut Company to reconsider the price of groundnut to compliment the president’s call to go back to the land. EDITOR’S NOTE An announcement last year indicated that the Gambia Groundnut Corporation is now under the Office of the President.]]>
