MAY DAY FOR SURVIVAL OR FOR SPORTS

75

st May or May Day is an International Day for workers. 27th April is the International Day for Sports. Foroyaa wonders why Workers DAY has been transformed into a National Sports Day since the First Republic while International Sports Day goes unnoticed. May Day should be a day when workers exercise their freedom of Association and Assembly by joining their unions to hold processions and deliver petitions to governments regarding grievances which require attention. May Day is being held this year at a time when those workers in the betting business are unceremoniously thrown into the cold wilderness of unemployment. Rising prices have made existing salaries grossly inadequate for survival. The Industrial tribunal is increasingly being resorted to in order to solve labour disputes instead of relying on collective bargaining. This confirms that the state of industrial relations is very poor. A clear manifestation of this is the problem of the dock workers. They have made their voices heard without listening ears. May Day should be a day to amplify their voices so that they would be heard. Foroyaa would have encouraged its staff to participate in corporate competitions if it was organised on International Sports Day. The Union and the organisers of the May sports activities should revisit the activity and consider holding it on 27 April so that the whole nation could be involved to promote healthy minds and bodies. Let May Day be preserved to improve the terms and condition of service of workers.  ]]>
