Lack of Interpreter Hampers Proceedings of Alleged Foiled Coup Trial

The trial of five members of the Gambia Armed Forces (GAF) facing charges of treason and related offences, failed to proceed on Thursday 2nd March 2023.

The accused persons in this trial are Lance Corporal Sanna Fadera; Sergeant Gibril Darboe; Corporal Ebrima Sanno; Corporal Omar Njie, and Sub-Inspector Fabakary Jawara.

They five face two counts of treason; two counts of concealment of treason and incitement to mutiny.

The case was convened for the prosecution to call a new witness but the matter was adjourned. Deputy Director of Public Prosecution, Abdul Maita Yusuf, informed the court that the 4th prosecution witness was in court and was going to testify in Mandinka.

At this juncture, Justice Basiru V.P. Mahoney informed that the court does not have a Mandinka interpreter for the case, and the interpreter was absent.

The case was then adjourned to the 6th day of March 2023 at 2 pm, for the continuation of the trial
