Different forces are at work in The Gambia. The key indicator is the state of mind of the electorate. There is hardly a person with a voter’s card who is not being sought after by both the ruling party and the opposition. The mood at the grassroots level is that people are preparing to cast their votes for the person of one’s choice.
The political parties are at different stages of readiness. However, none has made any pronouncement of non-participation in the elections. Some have gone further to carryout activities on the ground which is consolidating their preparedness for elections.
Comments from the Diaspora give the impression that some people are opposed to elections and may turn to other methods of struggle against the current government. There is no sign on the ground of such a move other than the burning of the APRC headquarters in Kanifing.
