QUESTION OF THE DAY

IS IT PRUDENT FOR GAMBIA TO WITHDRAW FROM THE ICC?

Many developing countries decided to ratify the Rome statute which gave birth to the International Criminal Court because of the desire to give a new image to those countries. Many countries did so without any pressure from any international body. They did not sign to imitate any other country.

It is therefore strange that countries like The Gambia are leaving the ICC under the pretext that ICC is focusing more on leaders of developing countries than those of Europe.

Those who want to influence the world must prove that they could be scrutinized by any individual or body without being found guilty. Many international conventions and institutions exist to guide any leadership to respect fundamental rights and freedoms.

A government should have its own principles, set up its own standards and aim high in providing examples of how a sovereign democratic people should be governed to live in dignity, liberty and prosperity. They have no cause to withdraw from any international body.
