Has Any Political Party Or Independent Candidate File Petition Against The 2021 Results?

QUESTION OF THE DAY

According to section 49 of the Constitution a political party or independent candidate may file a petition against the result in a presidential election before the Supreme Court. This must be done within ten days.

The results were declared on 5th December 2021. Up to the time of going to the press no candidate or party had filed a petition against the 2021 presidential results. Time is however running out and the countdown starts tomorrow. If no petition is filed within ten days, then the declaration made by the IEC would stand as the result of the 2021 presidential election.

Filing election petition is a normal process in a democracy. It should be accepted as part and parcel of the electoral process.
