Gamtel dumped out of Champions League

Gambian champions Gamtel have been booted out of the Caf Champions League after losing to Olympique Gamtel Opens CAF task todayKhourigba on both legs.

The Telecommunication giants bit the dust on a 2-1 score and needed to win without conceding a goal at home in Banjul in the second-leg.

However  like in the first fixture in Marrakech, the Gambian side were reduced to desolate figures at end of the whistle after the visitors blasted home a last-gasp winner to confirm the Moroccan side’s qualification the second and final round of the preliminaries.

Najib Koumya broke the deadlock with a teasing header from a corner past goalkeeper Baka Ceesay after twenty-six minutes ticked on the clock.

Desperation etching on their faces, Gamtel quickened their pace in a rather disjointed style of play and the pattern at least paid off with Captain Modou Sarr –scorer of Gamtel’s first-leg equalizing goal – rose to the occasion planting a header into the net to even matters in the 76th minute.

But striker Ibrahim Bezghoudi had the final laugh, snatching all points for the visitors with an injury-time winner. Even before this goal, the home side, like menagerie of strangers, stood no chance of qualifying at that moment.

A weary Coach Tapha Manneh wasted little time to voice disappointment over his men uninspiring display in post-match comment.

This exit only adds to the sour news that greeted the team when Gamtel player Amadou Baldeh dubbed, Ijaman, absconded in Morocco.
