GAMBIANS BECOMING INTERNALLY DISPLACED PERSONS IN FONI BINTANG

122

While candidates for mayoral and chairpersonship elections are crisscrossing their regions, municipality and city to seek for votes, a hot war is taking place just outside our borders in the Casamance area near Foni Bintang. The fighting has witnessed firing reaching Gambian houses in the area, thus causing people to leave their houses for safety. Literally they are becoming internally displaced persons.

It is a fact that if Casamance is at war Gambia cannot be in peace. This is why the conflict in the Casamance should not be seen as a mere Senegalese problem. When neighbours share common family ties and common heritage fighting would impact on all.

It is important for the Barrow administration to take this matter up with his Senegalese counterpart to promote a settlement of the conflict across our border.
