As the first heavy downpour of rains started recently in the Greater Banjul Area, the drivers of small taxi vehicles 
and vans plying the Serekunda, Tabokoto and Brikama routes are raising their concern over the bad state of the roads and calling for their urgent rehabilitation to save them from breakdowns.
The drivers are particularly concerned with the pot holes and large craters that are dotting these main roads of heavy traffic.
Speaking to this reporter at the garage at Ebony junction in Serekunda, Morr Gaye, one of the taxi drivers, said this poor condition of the roads has been there for several years now and that many rainy seasons came and gone without any effort been made to rehabilitate them. He said they will get worse if more heavy rains are to come. He called on the authorities to rehabilitate the roads now in order to spare the drivers and vehicle owners the damage of their vehicles.
Another driver expressed similar concerns, adding that the rainy season is always a difficult time for drivers in this country, with bad roads causing a lot of breakdowns.
He explained that the road was so flooded that his vehicle was touching the ground whenever he plunged into a pot hole or crater which, he said, could cause serious damages to the machine and other parts below.
“The government has built some of these roads but the quality and maintenance are the problem,” he added.
He also called on the government to help in the rehabilitation of the roads.
Lamin Sarr, one of the passers- by, who is also an auto mechanic by profession, confirmed that the poor roads contribute to the breaking down of many vehicles, especially during the rainy season.
