The National Sports Council is pleased to inform the general public that Faye
Alex Njie, Gambian Judoka, based in Finland, who earlier won The Gambia its
“rst silver medal in the history of the All Africa Games, in a bid to qualify to Rio
2016 Olympic games, on Monday 15th February, 2016 competed at the quali”ersheld in Austria.
In his category of 73kg, there were forty-four (44) athletes representing
twenty-nine (29) countries. Young Alex defeated his “rst opponent who comes
from Hungary. In the second round, he squared up against an athlete from
Kazakhstan and defeated him. In the third round, he won a Cuban, a three
times Pan- American Championship silver medalist, but lost to a Brazilian in the
quarter”nals. In the third place play o<s, he lost again to a Russian, thus
capturing 7th position in the competition.
As it stands, it is expected that his ranking will improve, thus standing a very
good chance of qualifying to the Rio 2016 games.

A Gambia striker has recently come in for some lukewarm dressing down after his coach ordered him to be in tip-top form ahead of start of the season.
Saihou Jagne, who had a lengthy sabbatical, spending part of his holidays in Gambia, cut a forlorn figure in his first match for new club Hamkam in Norway.
Jagne was resuming football after a number of months and noticeably ran out of fuel tank in the first-forty minute, as Hamkam got beaten in their first pre-season game.
The result didn’t exasperate coach Kent Bergersen red-faced but was apparently unimpressed over the input of a forward they reportedly broke the bank to recruit in their team last season.
Jagne netted ten times the previous term, triggering legion interests from clubs within Norway and prompted a hefty contract offer from an unnamed club in the Indian Premier League.
Hamkam however won the race to the sign the former Brommundal and AIK Solna goal-poacher capitalizing on the Scorpion’s desire to stay put in the Scandinavian country. The signing renewed fans hopes of promotion when the new season starts.
But Jagne first show left much to be desired.
‘I had wished he (Saihou) was in better shape when he came back (from Holiday), said gaffer Bergersen, adding ‘I think he looks healthy. There is a presence to him. We will try to get him in shape before the league starts’
Jagne himself said: ‘the holiday was long and I couldn’t score in the game, but first I need to work hard (on my fitness), then the goals will come later.’
The Norwegian third tier commences in April with Hamkam to open their campaign against Nardo.
