QUESTION OF THE DAY

ARE NEW CASES EMERGING IN CONNECTION WITH THE APRIL 14 AND 16 INCIDENTS?

After two months in detention, the state seems to be beginning the trial of the May arrestees at the high court. Many of the accused persons have entered ‘no defence’. They have left themselves completely to the court to decide what to do. A court is supposed to be a house of justice. It is meant to provide protection to those whose liberties are at stake.

The accused are supposed to proceed to make their defence from the presumption of innocence and not from the presumption of guilt.

Whenever a person is taken before a court without establishing any facts that he or she had criminal intention, but was dictated to act by conscience, he/she should be released to prevent miscarriage of justice.
