QUESTION OF THE DAY
It is important to point out that some candidates who participated in the National Assembly elections had to resign their posts as councillors to participate in the National Assembly elections of 9th April 2022. Vacancies were left and have to be filled before the next council elections next year.
Section 84 subsection (2) of the Elections Act states:
“Except where a vacancy occurs within nine months of the anticipated dissolution of the National Assembly or Local Government Council, the Commission shall appoint an election day for by-election for a member to represent a constituency or Local Government Area not later than ninety days after the seat became vacant.”
All those interested have collected forms. IEC has set the date for nominations as from Monday 25th April to Friday 29th April. The four council by elections will take place on 14th May, 2022.
