QUESTION OF THE DAY
WHO ARE THE PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATES IN THE GAMBIA FOR 2016?
The APRC which is the ruling party is yet to hold a Congress. There is
no formal declaration of its Presidential Candidate. However the
rumour that ECOWAS has banned Jammeh from standing in 2016 is not
correct. The ECOWAS Summit of Heads of State and Government held in May 2015 in
Accra Ghana considered a proposal for the community to embrace a term
limit but shelved the discussion for a later date. It is observed by
analysts that out of 15 Members states only Gambia and Togo do not
have term limits.
The reliable information we have is that PDOIS has held its Congress
in 2015 to rejuvenate its party structures and its members nationwide
and internationally are engaged in the nomination stage of a primary
to democratically select a Presidential Candidate. The process is on
and it is not clear whether there would be a run off at a convention.
This is the information we have so far regarding Presidential
candidature in 2016.
