By Sulayman Bah Gambia winger Demba Savage’s hope of playing in this year’s Uefa Champions League has all but faded after his Finnish club lost to Cyprus giants APOEL yesterday evening. Helsinki had a mammoth task of beating APOEL in the second-leg of the Uefa Champions League third round qualifiers after both side drew two-all with the Gambian accounting for both of his club goals in the first-leg, in Finland. But a much hyped Helsinki fell short of attaining the much needed win that would have guaranteed their automatic qualification into the last play-offs hurdle, as the hosts made home advantage count beating the visitors 2-0 to settle for a final 4-2 aggregate. Uncapped Gambian player Macoumba Kandji did not feature as he serves suspension for seeing red in the first-leg, but Demba Savage had a full go unmistakable presence in the starting line up till end of time. The end result was a mark of another heart-piercing moment for Gambia’s goal machine Savage whose hope of playing champions league football vanished. At the time of going to press, the 20-year-old uncapped Gambian defense ace Pa Konate was an unused substitute as his Swedish champions Malmo were on the brink of 2-0win over Czech club Sparta Praha.
