Chairman of Brikama Area Council, Sherrifo Sonko said on Tuesday inferno consumed goods and stalls at the main market in Brikama.
Sonko said the incident happened on Tuesday, 12 May 2020 around 12:00 am. He said by the time he received the information regarding the fire incident, the fire had already devastated goods and stalls in the area.
Chairman Sonko said he visited the area to confirm the information he received from people. He said he discussed with the people affected as well as the market committee members.
“Their complaints were numerous. The vendors were preparing for the forthcoming Koriteh feast. Some of the vendors said they bought some goods to resell during this period, but they loss them in the fire,” Sonko said.
Mr Hydara, one of the vendors said he bought a new refrigerator, an ice cream machine and school bags, but all these items were consumed by the fire.
Twenty-one canteens were consumed by the fire, according to the assessment carried out by the Council.
Foday Manjang, the president of the Brikama market committee strongly appealed to the government and other partners to support them since those affected by the fire lost everything during the incident, and they have families to feed during this difficult period.
An officer of the Brikama fire and rescue service said they could not respond on time because their fire tender broke down, and they had to contact the Serekunda fire station to come over support them. The cause of the fire is not known.
