Wrestling presidential-hopeful Modou Faye, popularly known with the moniker ‘Cham” has set about discussing
his plans for wrestling when he gets to occupy the sport’s top job.
The four-year tenure of the current executives of the Gambia Wrestling Association has elapsed with an elective congress a long way from being held.
The traditional sport is beset by a long drawn out furore between the current GWA leadership and its stakeholders.
The situation, which had the GWA on the receiving end of derides from vexed delegates who accused the Matarr Jarjue-led executives of overstaying in office amongst other alleged constitutional violations, throws possibility of the arena re-opening in serious doubts.
October 15 is the billed date for annual official opening of any wrestling season in the country but the matter was postponed with stakeholders more particular over review of the constitution which is still to be validated at congress.
And Modou Faye, dubbed Cham, one of those eyeing the wrestling hot-seat, has set about discussing his agenda to revamp the sport when elected.
In a move that can only be referred to as a quick race to campaign with an elective congress dragging, Faye is buoyed of sweeping the polls.
On his agenda, he said: ‘We will make sure that we have partnership with most banks. The current trend of paying raw cash to the administration will end when I take over’
‘We will modernize the sport to procedure of payment with payments backed by receipt which doesn’t seems to be the case in the recent leadership’
He continued: ‘We will make sure wrestlers are insured and travel to international tournaments by flight like athletes of other sporting disciplines in the country. We will engage companies to ensure their involvement in the game which can be a good marketing strategy for them because wrestling is widely followed across the country’
‘We will make sure the regional competition is back and running as previously. The issue of slow treatment of appeal cases will be thing of the past. This is just one of our many plans come after the elections,’ he tells Foroyaa Sport.
