In a milestone move for Gambian sports infrastructure, the Ministry of Youth and Sports, in collaboration with the Ministry of Lands, Regional Governments, and Religious Affairs, has officially secured a plot of land in Lamin, Kombo North, West Coast Region for the construction of a new national stadium.
The handover ceremony also saw the community of Lamin receive an additional plot for the creation of sporting facilities, a garage, and a market. The allocated land, which measures 346 by 308, 379 by 327, and 450 meters, will be managed by the Alkali and Village Development Committee (VDC) as community property.
Bakary Y. Badjie, Minister of Youth and Sports, emphasized the significance of the allocation, stating, “This allocation ensures the land remains a community property for sports or other agreed activities, preventing alternative uses based on past experiences.” He further affirmed the Ministry’s commitment to working with the Lamin community, noting their readiness to host the country’s second stadium once funding or partners become available.
Minister Badjie congratulated the people of Lamin and expressed hope for the successful completion of the project.
Speaking on behalf of the Lamin community, Mr. Bojang expressed gratitude for the long-awaited allocation, assuring that the land will be used for its intended purposes. “We will be more than happy to host the national stadium in Lamin,” he added.
A letter, signed by Dawda Darboe for the Director of the Department of Lands and Surveys, confirmed that the allocation was made in accordance with Part IV, Section 16 of the State Lands Act 1991. The plot measures 450.00 x 379.00 x 308.00 x 246.00 x 327.00 meters and is allocated for a term of ninety-nine (99) years.
Strict conditions accompany the allocation, including:
- Development must commence within six months and be completed within two years.
- A one-time premium and annual land rent will be calculated and paid.
- All building plans must be approved by the Director of Physical Planning and Housing.
- The allocation lapses if the land remains undeveloped for over 24 months.
- Execution of the lease is subject to substantial development.
- Preservation of existing trees and natural assets, and compliance with Environmental Impact Assessment recommendations.
- Survey fees and demarcation must be settled within thirty days, or the allocation will be withdrawn.
The landmark allocation marks a significant step toward enhancing sports infrastructure in The Gambia, with hopes high for the realization of the new national stadium in Lamin.
