Real De Banjul president Willy Abraham
has dismissed the doubts that the Real de Banjul and
Barrack Young Controllers CAF Champions league game would not go
ahead.
The first leg of the preliminary qualifier is billed for the BanjulMini-stadium but reports, as of yesterday morning, have cast doubt
over the possibility of the preliminary qualifier taking place.
A respected Liberian-based tabloid Africa Frontline claimed that
Barrack Young Controllers –the Liberian club to play in Gambia – are
being barred from coming by authorities in Banjul for fear of Ebola.
Air Maroc, which is said to be identified for transporting the Liberian
champions to Banjul, the paper stated, has refused to book BYC, on
orders from Gambian authorities, for fear of the spread of the
pandemic that has claimed thousands of lives.
When reached for comment, Real de Banjul’s President, Mr. Abraham,
denied the match being under any jeopardy.
“As far as I am concerned, the Gambia government, Football Federation
has done what they are supposed to do. Real de Banjul is in camp (for
the match). They (the government) have not stopped anybody from
entering the country. It was declared over the weekend and that they have
lifted the ban on countries affected by Ebola. If they (the Liberian
club) have an issue, that is their problem. The game is on Saturday at
four o’clock,” Mr. Abraham told Foroyaa Sport yesterday.
A GFF Spokesperson also said the much-talked about encounter will go
ahead as planned.
The Gambia government, over the weekend, issued a statement indicating that they have lifted
the ban on flights imposed on Ebola-hit countries.
The Liberian outfit consisting of a 39-man delegation, according to
official sources, is due in The Gambia on Wednesday.
