WILL THE MALIAN, GUINEAN, BURKINABE AND NIGERIAN LEADERS PRESIDE OVER ELECTIONS LIKE SENEGAL?

Ecowas has rolled back sanctions for unconstitutional takeover of government and Ex-President Macky Sall was being earmarked to see whether he would seek a third term. However he has decided to allow the Senegalese people to take their destiny into their own hands instead of staying in power for a third term or manipulating the election to get his party to win.

The current leaders emerging from coups d’état could help to promote the democratic space by not forming their own parties and participating in elections. They should ensure a level ground for multi-party election by an independent electoral commission and hand over to the democratically elected person.

The future will tell whether democracy is being rolled back or has gone to look for more power to resurge with greater force that will bring about a government that will put an end to poverty and injustice in the continent.
