The Mayoress and councillors of the Banjul City Council are having difficulty in deliberating and concluding matters of interests to the public. The main reason for this is the absence of standing orders to guide the deliberations of the council.
Foroyaa would like to reiterate that all councils are supposed to be operating according to their standing orders. A council without standing orders is like a country without a constitution. It is mandatory for the councils to have standing orders and to fail to do so would constitute a violation of the Local Government Act. Section 33 of the Act states:
The Council shall prescribe standing orders to regulate its proceedings and those of any of its committees and the conduct of its members.
We hope that all councils will comply accordingly. Foroyaa will continue to monitor the situation.
