QUESTION OF THE DAY

Why were all the detainees not released on 18 February 2016 as sign of respect for the day?

This question is likely to have entered the minds of family members of detainees and concerned Gambians all over the country.

Many prisoners have already been pardoned. One expected that those detained without trial would have been released since they are yet to be charged with any crime. Such people do not need the exercise of the prerogative of mercy. They are victims of impunity.

18 February should have been a reminder to those who hold power that every rule must come to an end. Hence it is more magnanimous to lead with justice as the guide to one’s actions and thus administer the country without fear or favour, affection or ill will.

We hope this question would exercise the minds of those who are to protect the lives and liberties of almost 2 million Gambians.
