We are told as a country, in 2022, Gambia imported 44 billion dalasi worth of goods. We could only export, minus the re-export, 1.2 billion dalasis worth of goods. Re-export, 1.7 billion. Total (export) stands at 2.9 billion. 44 billion imported. 2.9 billion is exported from The Gambia. A deficit of over 41 billion is recorded. The Gambia cannot carry itself in the world. That is the fact.
She doesn’t even have money to be able to bring goods into this country. That is the fact.
That is why in 2023, 59 million dollars had to be put as balance of payment support to facilitate the importation of goods into this country. That is why every year, the IMF will tell the government how much it gives as balance of payment support because she cannot carry herself in the world. Gambia continues to be indebted year after year. Why can’t she carry herself in the world? We are not producing what the country needs and what the country can export. It is evident from the figures above.
