QUESTION OF THE DAY

Why are some officials referring the Gambia as an Islamic State when there is none?

This is a question that all diplomats should put to the Gambia government.

A government is only legitimate if it is based on a Constitution. Any government that is not based on a Constitution is illegitimate.

The term ‘Islamic State’ does not exist in the Gambian Constitution. Hence, no responsible Gambian official should refer to the Gambia as an Islamic Republic.

The Gambia Government should be obliged to respect the country’s Constitution.
