WHEN WILL THE TRUTH AND RECONCILIATION COMMISSION BE ESTABLISHED?
The President does sometimes refer to the setting up of a truth and reconciliation commission. Many families have visited the offices of Foroyaa claiming that their loved ones have disappeared or been killed after they have been picked up by security forces. Some allege torture and so on and so forth. Many of these families cannot understand why they have been told nothing since they made statements to the police.
There have been arrests of security officers some of whom are now on trial. What is unclear is whether cases are to be dealt with separately outside the commission as they come up or whether the instrument for the commission is under preparation.
Needless to say, the setting up of such a commission is the prerogative of the president.
