WHEN WILL THE PRESIDENT ELECT TAKE OVER FROM THE PRESIDENT

According to section 63 of the Constitution the term of office of the president is five years. President Jammeh was sworn into office on 19 January 2012 after the November 2011 presidential election which he won by a landslide. Five years from 19 January 2012 is 19 January 2017. Hence according to the Constitution the president elect, Adama Barrow should be sworn in on 19 January 2017. Until then President Jammeh remains president and retains all the powers of a president. This includes the release of prisoners.
