When and How will the President address The National Assembly?

The State House Should Reply!

QUESTION OF THE DAY

One of the most important addresses, if not the most important, that the president is compelled to give annually is the state of the nation address.

The address is best done in the first Session of the National Assembly in order to  fully prepare it for a new legislative year.

It is however a constitutional requirement for the President to address the National Assembly at least once in a year.

Section 77 Subsection 1 reads:

“ The President shall at least once in each year attend a sitting of the National Assembly and address a session on the condition of The Gambia, the policies of the Government and the administration of the State.”

This is yet to be done in 2020. Now is the appropriate time to indicate the COVID-19 policy, strategic plan and programmes of the Government, in the short, medium and long term. This is the expectation of the public, especially those who are asked to shut their enterprises without government support up till now . Financial packages are being given for the most vulnerable. Owners of enterprises  whose means of survival are closed should be considered in an appropriate compensation scheme.
