Readers would recall that a tanker loaded with 36,000 tonnes of oil containing entered Gambian waters and offloaded and was accused of entering its cargo in a transparent, accountable and legal manner. In order to curtail the rumours, the National Assembly decided to establish a joint committee to look into all the allegations.
The committee submitted its report to the National Assembly on 26th June 2025 and has made findings and recommendations that are now to be subjected to debate by the National Assembly. Foroyaa will publish the report, once adopted by the National Assembly and the content of the debated that it generates so that clarity will be achieved by the Gambian population on the subject matter.
The lesson is also clear. Where the National Assembly performs its function of oversight there is no room for rumour mongering. The media will be able to know the facts and publish them in good faith, in the public interest.
