WHAT IS THE RELEVANCE OF 16th JANUARY?
A major development took place on 16th January 1997 which no Gambian
should forget.Sidia Jatta refused to be sworn in as a National Assembly member until
the President was made to take his oath of office which was the means
provided for by the 1997 Constitution to come into force.
On that same day, Chief Justice Alghali administered the oath of
office and thus brought the 1997 Constitution into force.
This was the end of the suspension of the first Republic and the birth
of the Second Republic.
Rather than the commemoration of 16 January as Republican day we have
a grand commemoration of National Traditional Medicine Day
