WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A SMOOTH CONSTITUTIONAL TRANSFER OF POWER AND A FORCEFUL TRANSFER OF POWER?

QUESTION OF THE DAY

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A SMOOTH CONSTITUTIONAL TRANSFER OF POWER AND A FORCEFUL TRANSFER OF POWER?

In a smooth transfer of power those who assume office must obey the letter and spirit of the constitution, uphold and defend the rule of law, human rights, democracy and good governance. Military and civil personnel who sell their labour power, knowledge and talent would not be subjected to any discrimination. Instead the new government must work on incentives to motivate them to be happy about the new administration. The new administration must make efforts to reform instruments and institutions to give better performance than its predecessor.

On the other hand, if there is a forceful transfer of power, constitutions are disregarded, institutions dismantled, and absolute power given to those who assume executive power to rule as they desire. Impunity must prevail.

We hope Gambians would support a peaceful transfer of power rather than a forceful one.
