The existence of vulnerable groups who are earning income below the poverty line is what has given rise to social protection programmes. Such programmes should not only be limited to consumption based welfare by giving handouts to the poor such as rice, sugar and oil. It should also be linked to the initiative to move people out of poverty.
The member for SerreKunda has asked the Vice President to indicate who the beneficiaries of the social protection programmes are. Foroyaa will review the rate of poverty; the interventions made so far and then make an impact assessment of the social protection programmes.
