Palestine is recognized by many countries but Israel is still occupying the land that should constitute part of a future Palestinian state that could co-exist with Israel as a neighbour.
The genocidal act of the Israeli government in response to the suicidal act of Hamas has given a sharp focus to the problem of Palestine as an occupied state. In order to ease the conscience of many leaders of the world, attempts were made by the UN Security Council to approve UN membership for Palestine, but the resolution was vetoed by the US. The General Assembly however decided to accept Palestine into its fold with a vote of 143 in support, 9 against and 25 abstentions.
Although the UN General Assembly cannot give full membership, it has given it more than observer status by allowing the Palestine delegate to address the Assembly and be part of key UN institutions. This will enhance its status in its bid to acquire full membership in due course.
