purpose of a Government of a Republic is to exercise authority to promote the general welfare of the people. We expected the President to empty all detention centres and decongest the prisons by granting pardons. A number of people had been granted pardons. Even if they are opposed to the government what difference has that made. The government had implemented the death penalty before, what deterrent effect did it have on insurgency. In our view, a president should have the mind of a whole people and not one of his or her own. At each time a president should ask: what is in the best interest of the people? The public interest and mind should guide his or her every action. It is not too late to make the 50th anniversary a memorable one. Independence should yield larger freedom in prosperity. General amnesty should have been the reward that would have made the difference.]]>
