Waste collection at the Wellingara dumpsite situated near the nursery, lower basic school and the main market is still going on.

To confirm this, the reporter monitoring the situation on Tuesday, visited the dumpsite.  The waste collection exercise is being carried out by Dresden-Banjul organisation in collaboration with the Brikama Area Council (BAC) and National Environmental Agency (NEA). The dumpsite which has been situated in Wellingara for years has been a health threat and concern to the people of that vicinity especially to the schools and market vendors.

A school official said the organisation brought 4 barrels for continuous collection of waste daily so as to maintain limited disposal of waste and also secure the children’s health. The source added, “We are really happy with their good job, hope it will continue”.

The caretaker of the school said daily waste collection is really helping them a lot especially with regards the movement of the children as the dumpsite was a health threat to them but now they are happy and glad about the situation.

The charcoal sellers also express their views. They said they are happy with the continuous waste collection exercise describing it as helpful, adding that it is no more a health threat to them. They pleaded for this process to continue.
