The Vice Chancellor of the University of The Gambia Professor Herbert Robinson has said that 1075 students are admitted at the University out of 1743 applicants. Out of this number, 527 are males representing 49%, and 548 are females representing  51%.

Mr Robinson said this at the 13th Matriculation Ceremony held at the University of The Gambia campus in Kanifing.

He said: “This year’s admission has been very competitive. We received 1743 applicants, however, we could only admit 1075. This is a special occasion, not only for our new students who are embarking on a transformative journey but also for us as an institution that is committed to nurturing the future leaders of our nation and the world.”

Speaking further, he said their admission marks the beginning of a new chapter in their lives, as they set to pursue higher education. He commended the new intakes for choosing the University of The Gambia as the place to further their academic aspirations.

“The journey that you embark upon today is not just about acquiring knowledge: it’s about self-discovery, personal growth, and development to contribute to nation-building. At the University of The Gambia, we don’t just prioritise academic excellence only, although it is a critical part of your journey, we also emphasize the importance of character, values, and social responsibility,” Professor Robinson said.

“We have ten Schools including the School of Graduate Studies and Research. Each School is headed by a Dean.”

The Vice-Chancellor explained that the university offers about fifty (50) undergraduate programmes, seventeen master’s degree programmes, and five PhD programmes.

“We are reviewing the portfolio of programmes to respond to the urgent needs of the country to build The Gambia we want and to contribute to an Africa that is prosperous and self-reliant,” he said.

Mr.Johnson also urged students to channel their problems – whether it is academic, administrative, or personal to appropriate bodies to enhance their academic work and progress, which helps to provide constructive feedback for the continuous improvement of all of their services.

He reminded students of the Matriculation Oath, encouraging them to abide by its principles and be guided by the rules and regulations contained in their students’ handbook.

“Please be aware that a breach of the oath that you have taken today will result in sanctions and disciplinary measures.

“On behalf of the Governing Council, the Senate, and University Management and Staff, I would like to congratulate you on your admission and welcome you as a member of the University of The Gambia academic community,” he said.
