The US Department of Homeland Security have on Tuesday arrested and detained an officer of The Gambia Armed Forces for immigration violations.
Kathryn Edwards Public Affairs Officer at the U.S. Embassy in Banjul on Friday told Foroyaa: “The Department of Homeland Security detained Gambian citizen Michael Correa on September 17, 2019. The U.S. Government remains in close touch with Gambian Ministry of Justice counterparts regarding the case.”
His arrest and detention came in the wake of allegations by some hitmen that Correa took part in the executions of some people.
She added: “The Department of Homeland Security detained Michael Correa for immigration violations.”
She cannot however confirm or deny whether Correa would be extradited to The Gambia.
Mr Correa is among a group of soldiers who left the shores of The Gambia in the wake of a political impasse which saw the international community mobilised forces to confront former President Jammeh after he refused to hand over power to Adama Barrow. Jammeh sought sanctuary in Equatorial Guinea in January 2017 after he was defeated in a presidential run off by President Adama Barrow.
