Electricity, like all utilities, should be available, accessible and affordable if a country is to be considered to have universal electricity supply. According to the minister of petroleum, energy and mines, Nawec is now poised to guarantee 90 percent availability of electricity supply by the end of 2025.
The minister failed to tell the nation the maximum energy requirement by commercial and domestic consumers by the end of 2025 and 2026. He also failed to indicate the give the total generation capacity by end 2025 and by end 2026. He has also not indicated whether the transmission and distribution capacities will be able to accommodate the generation capacity. The minister has also not explored the issue of affordability of electricity supply.
Foroyaa will seek to get more details from Nawec to give a true and fair view of the potentials and challenges of the management of the national grid.
Energy sovereignty is key to national development. Universal access to energy for domestic and commercial use is indispensable to productivity and general welfare. Nawec therefore holds the lifeline to a more productive and prosperous Gambia.
