Mohamed Ibn Chambas, the representative of United Nations Office for West Africa and the Sahel has called on Governments to play a vital role in implementing the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration.

Mr. Chambas who stated this in a press release issued by his office recently, said he was saddened by the news on the death of approximately 62 migrants on the coast of Mauritania who are mostly Gambians.

He urged all national stakeholders to redouble their efforts in addressing such complex challenges and also called on regional and international leaders to support engagements to stop the death and despair along migration trails.

“This reaffirms the foundational principles of our global community, including national sovereignty and universal human rights,” he said in the release.
