The Secretary General and Executive Committee of the United Democratic Party (UDP) has issued a statement of concern regarding the spread of the Corona Virus in West Africa. It reads:

‘‘The United Democratic Party joins all Gambians to express grave concern about the spread Corona Virus to West Africa. The spread of the Corona Virus is fast becoming a global emergency and Governments all over the world are taking drastic measures to prevent and control the spread of the deadly virus.

The Gambia Government is urged to take all necessary measures to address the concerns of Gambians in light of the fact that the virus has now been confirmed in the sister Republic of Senegal. The Gambia unfortunately has limitations – any threat of the spread of the virus will have implications on our tourism sector and will seriously impact our economy.

Therefore, it is imperative to have machines and equipment and kits to test whether people have the virus at all border crossings and all ports of entry, however, it is critical to educate people on how to prevent the spread of the Corona Virus. The United Democratic Party further urges the Government and all Gambians to embark on an intensive sensitisation campaign on preventative steps Gambians should take to.

The UDP endorses the recommendations from the Medical Research Council-MRC for careful health and hygiene measures should be cascaded to every person in the Gambia through every medium possible. UDP calls on the Government to act as a matter of urgent priority.
Finally, the UDP is calling on all people of faith to pray for the Gambia and Senegal for Almighty God to stem the tide of the spread of this deadly virus.’’
