Truck Owner, Driver Charged for Attempting to Smuggle Food Stuff Out of the Country

A Police spokesperson has on Thursday, confirmed that a truck owner and his driver who were arrested by Police for attempting to smuggle forty-one bags of sugar, two cartons of ‘madar’ and five cartons of engine oil out of the country, have been charged by the Police.

Police spokesman ASP Lamin Njie remarked: “The two are charged under the Emergency Powers Regulations 2020 and they will appear before the court by Monday.’’

He added that the driver and tuck-owner were since granted bail and are currently helping the Police in their investigations.

According to the Police spokesman, personnel of the Anti-Crime Unit (ACU) intercepted the truck along the high-way towards Giboro. He alleged the truck containing food commodities with registration number BJL 9730 D, was destined for Casamance.

Few weeks ago, dozens of trucks and boat were arrested by state security agents for allegedly smuggling food items outside the Gambia.
