TRANSGAMBIA’S BRIDGE CONSTRUCTION IN PROGRESS

Work on the Trans-Gambia’s bridge is in progress as the access road through the swamps on either side of the river banks are transgambias-bridge-construction-in-progressbeing mapped out.

The Trans-Gambia Highway is one of the most important roads in The Gambia, as it does not only connect the northern and southern parts of the Gambia but also a transnational route that links part of southern Senegal to the north. This highway is economically important to both Gambia and Senegal. Hence, the bridge is meant to facilitate easy transportation as commuters and drivers have been complaining about the long delays caused at the ferry crossing at Bamba Tenda and Yelli Tenda.

The Trans-Gambia bridge project is being financed by the African Development Fund (ADF) with a grant to the Gambia of Unit of Account UA 63.55 million, equivalent to D4 billion, aimed at reinforcing the economic cooperation and integration between the Gambia and Senegal and ECOWAS community as a whole.

The laying of the foundation stone was done by the Vice President of the Republic of The Gambia Aja Dr Isatou Njie-Saidy, as part of activities marking the 50th anniversary of The Gambia’s independence which was also graced by Mr. Mohammed Bun Abdallah Dionne, the prime minister of the Republic of Senegal.

Officially signed on 11th November 2014, the contract was awarded to two companies, namely JV Corsan Corvian of Spain and Arezki S. A. of Senegal, and is expected to last for 36 months.
