Foroyaa has been reminding the government of its dual responsibility of ensuring that roads and pavements are utilized for their established purposes and that people’s livelihoods are also secured in the process.
In the absence of industries to generate employment, The Gambia has been transformed into a small scale enterprise economy where a large percentage of the population depends largely on small scale commercial activities. Consequently, streets have been transformed into makeshift markets, thus obstructing traffic and movement of pedestrians.
To remedy the situation, arrangement should have been made with the councils to create marketing hubs where vendors and their clients could meet daily to promote marketing activities. It is therefore important that the road and pavement clearing exercise is linked to creating ways and means of providing facilities to prevent poverty from increasing, facilities for vendors to sell their wares in order to mitigate poverty.
