A Bill to promulgate The Constitution of the Republic of the Gambia 2020 has been published in Gazette number 30 of 28th May 2020.

The Bill seeks to repeal the 1997 Constitution and promulgate the 2020 Constitution. The Bill needs to be scrutinized clause by clause by Foroyaa to ensure that it is the exact replica of the draft Constitution presented to the President by the Constitutional Review Commission.

The Gambia is now entering the final phase of the transition. Whether there will be a third Republic or not, depends on whether the Constitution would be promulgated or not. There can be no Republic without a Constitution

A heavy burden will now lie on the heads of the National Assembly members as they prepare the ground for the debate on when and how to promulgate a new Constitution.

History will record this debate. The final outcome will determine what type of instrument would exist to guide the building of Gambian institutions after 2021.

Foroyaa intends to be a key tool for giving clarity at all stages of the Constitution making process.
