In No. 43 of The Gambia Gazette dated 14th August, 2024 the following gazette notice G.N. No. 134/2024 was published:
“ANNOUNCEMENT OF GAZETTE SUPPLEMENT
It is hereby notified for general information that it is intended to introduce the following Bill into the National Assembly:
An Act to Promulgate the Constitution of the Republic of The Gambia, 2024 and Repeal the Constitution of the Republic of The Gambia, 1997 and for related matters.
The text of this Bill appears in Supplement “B” to this issue of the Gazette.”
We have searched for Supplement “B” in order to know the text of the Barrow Administration Draft Constitution, but up to the time of going to press nit was yet to be published.
The Gambian population should therefore be careful in commencing a debate on the content of the Barrow Administration Draft constitution. The text must be published in the Gazette so that the National Assembly will have the correct version which should be the subject of their deliberation.
As it stands whatever is in circulation that is not a carbon copy of what is published in Supplement “B” may be misleading. The executive should be efficient in doing what is required by law.
The Draft Constitution that is to be promulgated should be published in full so that the public would know what they would be voting for at a referendum if the National Assembly members were to approve the Bill at the Third Reading.
In the same vein, the public would know what to say to the National Assembly members in terms of the consideration and scrutiny of the text at the Committee stage. Foroyaa is still waiting to receive the Gazetted text of the Barrow Administration Draft Constitution for review. We will continue checking until we get a copy of the said draft.
